Had my father had the accumen of Jock Tracey I'm sure he wouldn't have been out collecting pools money any road! It is still there. I was told it had gone but checked on Friday. Just by pure co-incidence I came across the following planning application whilst researching a train crash I just missed at Kirkstall Viaduct in 1970.06/00922/FU accessible from the Leeds City Council website.http://planningapplications.leeds.gov.uk/publicaccess/A four story apartment block of 18 bijou studio apartments and 4 one bedroom flats at 83, Cardigan Lane, Burley. Already granted (I think).GRRRRRRR ...
We wanted to make Leeds a better place for the future - but we're losing it. The tide is going out beneath our feet.

I had my hair cut by Jock many a time when I lved in Stanmore Hill - always a very pleasant chap to talk to, and a good honest barber too. I was also almost a daily visitor to the baker's shop half way down Stanmore Hill below the allotments - the baking was excellent, and the local news - hotter off the press than the bread - was always worth hearing. The baker was called Raymond and his Mum served behind the counter.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

My Grandma passed away towards the end of last year, 99 years old. She lived most of her life in Argie Avenue and remembered the village well, my Mum also remembers it. My mum said all the houss were fairly small, and the people were a bit queer (in the innocent term). The village was fairy self contained and had it's own squire - my mum remembers his house and possibly a piggery.

I recently found out that my grandfather had the Off-Licence for a while - the one that still stands - the only remaining building of the old village. I think my mother may have been born there - wish I'd asked her about it while she was still alive..

Yes, it's still an Off Licence - there are old photos on Leodis that show it used to be part of a terrace..

Hi Sorry to drag this back up but i've only just found this amazing website. Its so interesting to find out what was in local area before i moved here. I currently live on Beechwood View backing onto Beechwood Terrace and never even knew there was a village in Burley. Obviously there are a few streets call Village but it never really crossed my mind that was a fully functioning village. It was only 2 months ago that was was talking to the 89 year old lady who lived next door. Shes lived in the same house all her life and she was telling me how the area had changed over the years... and not for the best. Shame she move out 1 month ago to an old peoples home. I would have love to quiz her more. Anyway the main reason i was added a note was could someone tell me where the village actually was. what streets bordered it? i'd love to have a nosey round when i walk the dogs to see if i could see any old remnants.Thankswalters2001

On what is now known as Burley Green.Next time you're in town pop into the Museum shop and pick up a copy of the 1906 map for the area. The old village is clearly laid out. Also - have a mooch around the Leodis website.
