Chalky, For more information on the Roman road, see Don Cole's "Tracks and Roads in A Yorkshire Parish". This is one of a number of excellent short books by Don Cole on the local history of Adel and the surrounding area. The book mentions a couple of archaeological excavations of the Roman road, one near the Parkway and one in Cookridge.I believe the Roman Road crosses King Lane at the bend by Golf House Farm, just where the footpath along the edge of Headingley Golf Course emerges onto King Lane. At one time you could see a stony surface area a few yards in from King Lane and I wondered whether that might have been the Roman road. But it might equally have been some infill for the small informal car parking area near the gate into the golf course.

An 'archeology-buddy' said it's easy to find.Foundation of sandstone cobbles with crushed sandstone beaten down into it.Topped off with bonded stones, kerbstones at either side and a drainage ditch on it's drain side.About 24 feet width.Despite all hints and tips I couldn't find it. And it was cold.

I've spotted a bit of the road on Google Maps, but I doubt if it can be detected at ground level.Click on the red cross to view a map from the 1890s, showing the portion of the road where it crossed Otley Road near what is now the Parkway Hotel. The farm at Cocker Hill is now Heron Farm. Where the road extends over Otley Road going East, it peters out. This short section can be seen as two parallel lines on the Google Map:http://local.google.co.uk/?ll=53.866953 ... 2&t=h&z=17

Val Crompton has pulled together a history of Adel. She notes...1702 Thorseby rceives two cartloads or roman artefacts from adel1702 remains of an aqueduct, fragments of pillars and funeral monuments found.1928-1932 roman paving, hearths and a crmation burial found by excavationTwo long mounds noted as a Roman Camp on left just over bridgeRoman fort (later farm settlement?) confirmed in 1996 at high leas up from the mill and campRoman baths to west of the fort fed by spring now channeled under the road where there's a fork in the road.Quite a lot of Roman stuff round there!!

Spooky, isn't it? I noticed that after I'd posted - I decided it was a wolf!
