There was Meadow Dairy, Maypole, Melias, and Gallons - all similar type shops, selling butter, eggs, bacon, biscuits etc. I often wonder what happened to them - were they subsumed by the likes of Asda? In the 60s several of the chains such as Maypole, Melias, Home and Colonial and Liptons were part of a group called Allied Suppliers which was bought by James Goldsmith's Cavenham Foods in the early 1970s, and then in turn by Argyll Group, which included Presto and Safeway UK supermarkets. Safeway were of course bought by Morrison's in 2005. I would imagine similar things happened to the other chains.

They all used to have the same smell - fresh coffee and cheese. There used to be a grocers in Leeds (and Wakefield) markets called Redmans. They used to sell a similar range, but they also sold salmon paste to weigh out, which IIRC was delicious.

Redmans were still in Halifax Borough Market and the more modern market in Huddersfield.

Oh I can still remember those smells emanating from The Maypole on Kirkgate, we used to go every Saturday on the tram and get the supplies. Just thinking about it I can taste the cheeses.
Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

My later father in law was FD at Assoc Dairies Group in the late seventies to mid 80s. He sadly passed in 1999 but I am sure he said that the dairy was purpose built.
