I worked in City House on and off from 1967-1968 and again from 1981 to 1988 (it was showing its age even then). It was handy for the station but that's about all it had going for it. Most of the offices were occupied by government departments. The building's staff restaurant up on the 12th floor was quite good and reasonably cheap as I remember. There was no underground parking so my employers used a car park which was under the railway arches. Easily accessible on foot (down the steps under the Rotunda (taxi office back then) and across the road and into the pedestrian entrance. By car it was a different story. To get to it you had to drive down Bishopgate Street and turn left onto Sovereign Street opposite the Dragonara then left past the British Legion car park (no connection). The City House car park was under the arches (behind Mitchell's Car Hire). You would drive in and, despite only permit parking operating, generally find it full unless you were lucky. What a palaver!! Too many permits issued. I must have spent hours over the years trying to find a spot in there.Oh-hum happy days?

There is a report on page 12 of today's YEP about a planning application relating to City House. The artist's impression of the proposed appearance of the outside of the building looks impressive. This is the link to the online report in the YEP website http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/n ... _1_3636447

It was a neglected pit for much of the time in recent (10-20) years. Frankly given the lack of longevity of many buildings from that mould, I'm surprised it is to receive quite such levels of financial input.Bruntwood are not prone to going into bad investments though - so they much think it has a future - it is certainly in need, one of the first major elements of Leeds encountered by rail users.

If this goes ahead it will without a doubt improve the appearance of the area at a stroke. My only concern is what happens when a low sun shines on it and reflects off all that glass..?I was also very surprised to read that the building has been empty since 2006 - no wonder the previous owners went into administration.

They seemed to manage OK with the Bourse.I'd like to know what happens at ground floor level. The artist's impression shows a windowless wall with tiles and the iron girder from the viaduct, but I think it would be better with openable windows and something like a cafe so it isn't just a litter depository as it is now. New Station Rd is the main route to the some of the new shopping centres but it isn't the most attractive way to get there.
