I never forgave Allders for demolishing that famous clock tower "on structural safety grounds." What a load of tosh - I have no building knowledge or skills at all, but I find it impossible to believe that a small stubby structure like that couldn't have been refurbished without sending the share prices plummetting !!
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

There is now no Allders to forgive or otherwise of course. Not only COULD money have been spent on its refurbishment-money WAS spent on it. around £36,000 was spent on making the tower safe and renovating the clock[by Potts] about a year before it was demolished,I happen to know. It was subsequently demolished on a pretence as Allders feared its existence would jeopardise future developments, which in the event, never materialised. All the above is “allegedly” of course!
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

Crikey drapesy - that's even MORE unforgiveable then, and I can't imagine what they based that "fear" on - they make some funny decisions in Croydon you know !!

One is bound to wonder if the act of demolishing the clock tower was the first "foot in the door" move towards spiking the guns of those who would prefer to see the building listed.Certainly the building is nothing special now it has been demolished. It is incomplete and not as intended by the architect. If the building does get destroyed then practically all of what's left of the history of the community that used to exist around the Kirkstall Lights will have gone.As an aside does anybody remember the junk / second hand shop more or less diagonally across the lights? I remember it as being full of rubbishy old musical instruments, Non-Stradivarious violins for instance. Across the road was a traditional gents barbers shop directly adjacent to the 44 bus stop, outside the Star and Garter. Round the corner towards Leeds was a "Busy B" butchers shop.
We wanted to make Leeds a better place for the future - but we're losing it. The tide is going out beneath our feet.

Passed by yesterday and noticed the nibbler at work on the main building, the rest had nearly gone.

Really annoyed to find that BHS had shut. It was really useful. Mind you, it was huge and often very quiet so probably not economic to run.
Shame to see that frontage destroyed as I think it's quite attractive, but one cannot stand in the way of progress. We will be getting a shiny new shopping park so can't complain really.
