That's the goit that took water down to the Kings mills and the isle of Cynder. the entrance was where the river takes a sharp right to go under the station, the goit going straight ahead. leodis has pictures of the work to block it. I've never quite worked out where it went after that as the fall through Bishopgate is quite large needing a couple of weirs.

That's the one Cardi - Phill has posted quite a bit about this in the earlier days of SL.

Does anyone know why the Queens is so called and not Queen's, as Queens is plural? I've noticed that its name on its frontage in City Square is "The Queens". I've always called it 'Queens Hotel', so it must have changed its name at some stage (probably after its ownership changed in 2003 as noted in chameleon's post on 23 December 2009).

Before The Queens Hotel was built (1937 so it's 75 years old this year, Nov I think) there was a well-to-do hotel called The Queen's Hotel. I don't know much about it but I'm sure it's easy to find info on. Maybe the title issue is to do with the Queen never having stayed at the Queens Hotel?

Just thought id let you know that the Aire Street building, adjacent to the Queens, will be vacated within the next 8 weeks, thus allowing the "supposed" expansion of the Queens, with a view to providing facilities to make it a 5 star hotel.Dont forget, that is supposedly expanded for 5 star, they may have changed their mind since.

I was told 10 years ago that the reason the Leeds Marriot was not 5 star was that it didn't have it's own car park. Subsidised parking in the adjacent NCP, which I understand they looked into buying, did not count. If true and still true the Queens will struggle on a quest for 5 star status if as CNOSNI says it is still their intention.

Passing by today I noticed that though the name high up the on the City Square frontage is 'The Queens' (as it also is on the awning above the doorway) just above that doorway it is given as 'Queens Hotel' in stonework (I had not spotted that before). A thread titled 'Queens Hotel stories' that was started today in SL has a response by Chrism that interestingly has a photo of a cup that is marked 'The Queen's Leeds'.

When doing a search of Leodis for something else I came across this about 1953 photo of a tram in front of the Queens Hotel. It may be quite a nostalgic image for those who recall the trams in Leeds. This is the Leodis link:- http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... SPLAY=FULL
