Oddly its been renamed to Central Arcade - pretty sure there's already a central arcade in LeedsLooks like its getting a Greggs on the corner of Briggate. It does look good. Mind you, it cant be much worse than what it looked like before!I just hope that it helps to open up that part of town a bit more. It almost doesn't really lead anywhere...

Thanks Work on the now called Central Arcade is still not finished though it is clearly just about there. It is now open to walk through from Briggate to Central Road (and vice versa).

This photo (which I took on May 29 2012) shows the view looking along 'Central Arcade' from Central Road to Briggate. The renovation of what used to be called 'Market Street Arcade' is near to completion and some units are now being fitted out.

Always remember the upstairs been a chinese restaurant. Had many a lunchtime special there.Anyway the new stores are been offered to new tenants with 9 months free rent, just to get the place going apparently. How long before the homeless start to use it?How long before the clubbers start to use it as a toilet?
Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

I remember well the chinese restaurant......Was the first one I ever set foot in many years ago with my elder brother. It was quite a posh experience eating out in a chinese back then.We used to use one on upper Briggate(place upstairs) as well near the Grand. The place in the arcade though just seemed to get grubbier year by year.Used to get my jeans too in a shop inside the dark, gloomy arcade. You could never quite see what you were buying but they were cheap!

There's a Greggs at the main position at Briggate and virtually everything else is empty. Quite. This is one of the many things I don't understand regarding our fair city. There are empty shops scattered all over the place (including most of The Core and large parts of The Plaza), yet we've Trinity opening next year (big fanfare) with what seems like lots of big name retailers simply relocating from elsewhere in the city centre (more empty shops?) and persistent plans for the ongoing Eastgate Quarter, which in addition to giving us a vital John Lewis store seems destined to drag Marks and Sparks off Briggate and create a load more holes in the existing city centre shopping line up.It's much the same with office space - a fair amount unlet, eyts lots of plans for more.I'm sure it makes sense to someone...
