I think I am about 10 years older than most on here. I have had a read through the threads re cafes but saw no mention of the ones below. My memories of them are sketchy to say the least and I can not remember clearly where they were!1. The CarouselWhich I went into in 1967/8 as I attempted to get a date with a girl. I think it was quite trendy at the time (I did not get the date and got the last number 14 back to Halton!) I think this cafe was in the area of the cinemas behind Lewis's?2. The Four Cousins? (I think this was the name)Located in the streets opposite the market, perhaps in a little arcadeIf anyone can shed more light on these i would be grateful as I left Leeds a long time ago
Born in East leeds, then lived in Halton and aged 20 moved to Tyneside

More precisely it was almost opposite the old ABC Cinema. It was just a doorway - you went downstairs to the coffee bar. A similar place was El Toro on Boar Lane, next to The Peel pub I think. There was also the American Bar, downstairs of one of the premises on the left of Wellington Street, opposite the side of The Majestic.

The Carousel I remember was opposite the Golden Ring Chinese on Upper Briggate. It was next door to the Delmore (?) When Helen and I first started "eating out" the Carousel was one of the places where we ate rump steak, chips (like McDonalds chips) mushsrooms, tomatoes and French fried onion rings. The Delmore was another. I seem to remember that what is now the Tripti (on Merrion Street) Indian was in those far off days the Blue Lagoon - you could get something similar in there too.The first Chinese meal I ever ate was in the Golden Ring - I can't say I enjoyed it and it took Helen five years to persuade me to try again - which I did in the Peony (?) on Commercial Street - I had curry chicken and chips and thought myself very brave!

Is the Golden Ring restaurant the chinese close by to the Wrens pub? It is years since I was in there. I remember as a 17/18 year old, circa 1963, going there with 3 mates, after a skinful of Tetleys at the Melbourne in Meanwood, for our first 'chinky'. We all ordered beef chow mein. When we had cleared our plates, much to the consternation of the waiters, we all ordered another. Never been back there since.

I was a similar age, but it was 1964, Boxing Day to be precise. We'd been to the Leeds Wakey game at Headingley and were going to Elland Road to watch Leeds Utd. in the afternoon. It was my first chinky - I had Chop Suey and fried rice and couldn't finish it! I'm still not that keen on Chinese food - as served in the run of the mill Chinese in the UK. I don'tmind their curry but I'm not keen on the rest. In the seventies Helen and I would go for the business lunch at various Chinese restaurants. It was a three course lunch and there was always soup, a choice of two or three English or Chinese dishes, sweet and coffee. And amazingly cheap. The soup was my favourite - it was like wallpaper paste with various flavours added - it was the same type of soup whichever Chinese you went in all over the country!

Bridge End Cafe.Opposite Adelphi pub. Run by a guy called George and open all night. I enjoyed many a bacon sandwich at 4am before taking the first bus out of Sov St Garage 42 to Harehills in the 60s. Jimmy Saville was a regular at that time of day telling us his Roll Royce was out side. Happy Days.
