Something reminds you of something else and next minute it's stupid o'clock.Any road up, I've landed here because the photo of those steep steps on the Rosebank thread reminded me of going to the flicks when we lived at Woodhouse. Our local was the Royal on Meanwood Road but sometimes we were dragged up some really steep steps and streets from Cambridge Road to....what? I thought it was the Star but that turns out to have been off York Road. Always remember those steps because we had to stop off for ten minutes to do tipple overs on the safety bars that stopped you hurling headlong down to Cambridge Road in icy weather. I had to be escorted out of Elvis' Flaming Star because I was bawling too loud [it was a sad ending okay? and I was only wee]. I'd love to see a photo of those steps. Seemed like Mount Everest to me but I bet there were about fifteen of them really. Cuh.But I bet none of you south of the river lot know what I'm on about eh? Leodis was no help either. While I'm on, we moved from there and my next Satdi Matni venue was the Regent at the bottom of Torre Road. I think it's bingo now. And our baths were Meanwood Road, then York Road and Union Street after moving. The latter somehow morphed into Millgarth cop shop. JanceeI think the cinema you remember might be the "Astra"(sounds a bit like 'Star'???) on Woodhouse Street near the Chemic- on the other side of the road. - closed in 1958. Failing that there was a cinema called the "Electra "on Jubilee Terrace off Woodhouse Street (closed 1957)(info from Robert Preedy's book).

There was a cinema on Camp Road -closed in early 1959-called the "Victory". The was also a cinema on Carlton Street, Little London called the "Carlton" closed in 1965. either of these?

Jan Cee The Carlton was up the steps and through the Servia's onto Carlton Hill. The Astra and Electra were also trotting distance from Cambridge/Oxford Road. Also the Royal Cinema on Meanwood Road was a gentle stroll away from home. The only problem with the Royal was that it had glass viewing panels in the entry doors from the cinema into the toilet areas. So you had to ensure when you opened the external fire doors to get your mates (or Dad) in for free, that you did it when the house lights were on, otherwise the concessionaire would see the glare from the street light down Kingfisher Lane.I remember the pandemonium in the Astra when Bill Halley's Rock Around The Clock was shown. The police were called as most people(teens) were dancing in the aisles and generally disturbing the fleas. The Saturday Matinee at the Royal was a weekly highlight. Saving the special tickets handed out each Sat eight weeks before Xmas to exchange for free entry into the Christmas party for a free ice cream and watered down orange juice. The Little Rascals a series of shorts about a bunch of New York kids who lived in the tenements were shown each week. They were depicted as impoverished, but we saw them as well off! one of them had a bike

JanCee wrote: Thanks drapesy but I'm not convinced about either of those. Going to Woodhouse Street we wouldn't have taken the route up through the Servias from Cambridge Road. Also I think it was later than those closure dates. I'm thinking this place would be more Camp Road/Blenheim area. Which reminds me. I was forever being told, 'Get washed, you look like one of the kids off Camp Road' Like we were posh on Cambridge Road! We lived in Servia Place, I remember those steps, I think they led to Blackman Lane, there were steeper steps up near Brays Factory. We went to the Carlton cinema up Blackman Lane and turned left at the church, All Saints I think

Hi GeoffBGoing back to 1936. (WHAT dinosaurs? Oh! Me!, yes!),Being aged 6, we had a few changes of venue in those days.(One step ahead of the bailiffs!). We lodged in a basement 'buggy' flat in Wellclose Mount (No13!)for several months, until we found a house in the Rosebanks. See threads (and pix of.) and don't yawn too much! Still reading? Well, Carlton Hill was down the bottom of the Street from what I remember, and it contained the Carlton Cinemaand also Carlton Barracks where we used to go on the shootingrange when I was in the Blenheim Army Cadets 1942-'47.I can remember that Carlton Hill used to split in two, coming up fromWoodhouse Lane. Left hand side formed a steepish hill that had the cinema on it, and the bottom right hand lane led to the Barracks. Those are my memories of the Carlton, Wellclose Mount, BlenheimSchool and Blackman Lane.Suppose it's much different now?CheersArry AwkPS Wasn't Bray's factory in Education Rd, off Meanwood Rd?
