Cliff house was for many years a boys remand home in the 1950's. My father was one of the superintendents there before the place was shut down and the remand home transferred to Whinmoor Grange around 1962. I do remember the large entrance hall and the black & white mosaic tiles on the floor and the large curved staircase. It was certainly an impressive sight for a 9 year old. However, I don't think the boys saw it like that as they had to get down on hands & knees to clean it every day!The boys were usually there for 3 weeks for assessment & report. Most would get probation after this and the rest would end up at Aycliffe Reform School in Durham. The place could be approached either from the front on Fawcett Lane or through Western Flatts Park.

The exterior of both the main house and gate house have been externally restored to an extent and re-roofed.There is a site portakabin which is sometimes lit up but apart from that no signs of activity whatsoever.Does anyone on here know what the situation is? This may be a good one for Phill and the Exploration Society team!         hers is some more recent pictures taken about a year ago http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.c ... Id=1110347
