Les Dawson & Roy Barraclough spring to mind here! The shops close down because the owners don't make profits and the shops are not profitable because people don't use them .The lack of " community spirit " can't simply be due to the disappearance of the corner-shop surely ?

Mass shopping areas, aka white Rose, Asda Owlcotes, Tesco's at Seacroft are whats to blame for the demise of the local community. places like them open up and operate at such a miniscule profit margin they force the smaller local shops out of existence. Armley town street is a prime example.. Massive shopping "Malls" (christ I hate the americanisms that are creeping into English Diction these days) and the ease at which to get to them has killed it. Together with the greedy B.. Sorry can't use that, owners of the actual buildings pushing rents to a max.Less that 20 years ago Armley Town st had records shops, numerous green grocers, butchers, even a bloody Woolworths.. Look at it now. No wonder it's dying on it's arse!! such a real shame. Modern life eh, who the hell wants it! I'm saving my money to buy some land and be totally self sufficient, well, within reason of course!!

Skippy the shops were demolished 25 years or so. I remember them knocking them down. The shops were located between the Railway pub and the Bay Horse on Belle Isle Road.

The middle shop used to be Nelsons chinese in the very early 80s. I used to go with my parents for the very very occasional treat.

I had a mate who lived nearby and we used to get takeaways from here regularly - 'Nelson' was a real character - from Hong Kong I suppose originally - he kept a base-ball bat behind the counter in case of trouble - and wasn't afraid to use it!!!
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.
