Hi Phill. I'm afraid I find most railway videos a bit of a two-edged sword. There were only a few people filming before the early 1960s, so most of what is available shows the sad last days of steam, with locos in appalling condition, filthy, squeaking and groaning, and leaking from every possible orifice. My fond memories are from the first half of the 1950s when recovery from wartime misuse had been overcome and most passenger engines were at least reasonably clean, and some of them absolutely gleaming. Being a sad old so-and-so I have bought videos from the "Decades of Steam", "Steam on 35mm", and most fascinating of all, John Huntley's "Trains from the Arc" series, all of which remind me of the steam period I loved, and its earlier history. The final brief shot of the video you posted has resonance for me. It shows a "Jubilee" on shed at Holbeck, with, wonder of wonders, a cleaner standing on the boiler handrail polishing the boiler top. It can only have been 45562 "Alberta" which, along with Black Five 45428, had been given special treatment in order to work a Royal Train for the Duke of Edinburgh in May 1967. In fact both locos received partial repaints "on shed", a very unusual occurrence. At the time I was ODM resident fitter at the shed, and encouraged Gerry Barry and his co-workers as they restored some dignity to steam for the last time it was used to head a Royal Train.Incidentally, Holbeck was at that time the last steam shed in the country to house express passenger locos, the three (I think) remaining Jubilees.

The black and white checks stuck in my mind as I thought there must be a motor racing track there! I can only think of two places where you can still see black out paint in good condition today. One is here outside St Gemmas on Harrogate Roadhttp://goo.gl/maps/b8f0yThe other on the railway bridge at Copley Hill herehttp://goo.gl/maps/g9DSw Does this bollard count?http://goo.gl/maps/eCrxw

My flickr pictures are herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/Because lunacy was the influence for an album. It goes without saying that an album about lunacy will breed a lunatics obsessions with an album - The Dark side of the moon!

How about also the bend in the road where the B6157 'Leeds and Bradford Road' crosses the canal on the approach to Bridge Road in Kirkstall? Or is this a modern check pattern? No good at attaching link to maps sorry.

There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.
