And very easily synthesised with minimal equipment! Sandoz were one of my peripheral customers in a former work-life. The majority of their work, certainly in the UK was more directly profit-orientated, producing generic equivalents of branded pharmecuticals off-patent - the cheaper versions of the same thing. (Generic paracetamol v Panadol (brand) is an everyday example - one and the same thing). Not sure were their primary focus is now.

Reminds me of an old Animals song from my heydays"When I Was Young" is a song performed in 1967 by The Animals. The B-Side "A Girl Named Sandoz" is named after the drug company that invented LSD. Well I met a girl called SandozAnd she taught me many, many thingsGood things, very good things, sweet thingsI met her one sunny morningIt was hot but the snow lay on the groundStrange things, very strange things, my mind has wingsSandoz, Sandoz who taught me loveSandoz, Sandoz heavens aboveThey could all learn something from your mindYeah babyShe is very old You may think she's youngOne kiss from her And you know your time has comeGood times, for all time, SandozSandozSandoz
Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

Hi all,Sorry to dissapoint all the LSD theories, although Sandoz and latterly Clariant did, europe wide, work in pharamceuticals, the Horsforth site was mainly dyes and inks (in both liquid and powder form)! They used to be a customer and I have been round the site many times over the years.Although some of the products used in the manufacture of inks, dyes and optical brightners are classed as hazardous, nothing sinister or of great note was made on site.Having said that some of the products made were of very high value but of no use to anyone other than the intended recipient/customer.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Wasn't Quorn originaly derived from a fungus growing on the roots of Corn [hence the name]?

Dunno about Quorn, but there is a town somewhere down south called Quorn I think, it might be named after that? I know that the factory furthur along Low Hall Road was a dye works and that is a seperate business to Sandoz, also derelict now. I posted some photos of the place on here a year or so ago.

The fungus from which Quorn was manufactured was originally found in the soil of a wheat field in Buckinghamshire , so the name is ublikely to be derived from Corn
