Googling "ordnance survey abbreviations" gives ES as "end of straight (railway)" and for MH "malthouse" or "manhole". Presumably those on the map reproduced refer to tramway in the first instance, and manhole in the latter - they would have to be dolls house sized malthouses! EDIT Looking again at the map, I suspect that ES in this case might refer to something else not mentioned in the lists of abbreviations.

There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

I'm not sure if it was a separate building, or part of the library itself. Thanks for that Phill, and I must admit to being just amazed at how the memory falters - I seem to recall that the Labrador was "persuaded" into a doorway along the side of the complex and then I thought I turned half right to a little counter - but it was in 1957/8 after all.

Just looking at the older maps Blakey, you may well recall correctly here. The police station seems to have moved (or expanded) into the small building next to the library on the 1955 map.Perhaps there was a general run down of this Police station before it closed, the station relocating to the small building as a mere information desk/enquiries?The 1967 map seems to suggest that too, It also solves the puzzle of what the old metal green door was that still survives herehttp://tinyurl.com/3kqavkfThe green paint looking right for an electricity sub station.

Thanks Phill, that's reassuring. While I am of course always happy and appreciative to have old inaccurate memories corrected, I really did have a strong impression of the Police Station entrance being on the straight Abbey Road face of the complex - roughly where the present bus stop is - although the main road was much narrower then and the area where the Sports Centre now stands was quite "original" and the present development I suppose not even envisaged.
