I agree with Drapesy. The building's architecture, IMO, is consistent with the date of 1854, though this may be the year the company which owned it was formed. The white keystones show the date twice, two rams' heads, and the central one appears to be the fleece from the Leeds coat-of-arms.The worn signs either side of the central doorway appear to be painted shields, similar to the Salvation Army's logo. The top line reads, "H M," but I can't make out the second line. Anyone got better eyesight?

I was in the centre of Leeds today so I had a look at the shields on the wall. That on the left seemed to start with H M then the presumed surname started with a ? S and then had 2 or 3 letters and seemed to end with MAN or MANS (though that does not really seem so in the photo!). That on the right is more eroded and I could not really make anything out. I did not have my camera, though I'm not sure if that would have helped.

I thought if it is a building still surviving from 1854 that would be worth noting If you get beresfords east end west end then you can wander the park square area and gravitate up towards clarendon road before finishing at the university. Along the way you will find many georgian buildings older than this plain early victorian building and plenty of blue placques. It's a fabulous walk leodian....

This is a photo that I took on August 30 2011. It shows one of the old shield shaped signs that for once was not covered over by a wheelie bin (the other such sign was again covered by the bins). It is still very hard to be definite what is on the sign but in an enlarged view it does seem to state 'H M SIMANS' though there is other wording beneath (thus older) that I cannot make out.

The other covered letters below it are even harder to tell. I had a good look when I took the photo but I still could not make out what the covered letters said.

I don't know if I'm being of help or just muddying the waters but if you go to Leodis - City Centre - Bedford Street (pic. no. 2004224-8621789 it refers to a firm by the name of Buckley's. The pic. is actually of Greek Street but refers to Buckley's also being in Bedford Street as well. Sorry if what I'm writing is irrelevant.
