Images on Leodis

I wonder if somebody with a better memory than mine, or access to old street plans can help me with a couple of images on the Leodis Pot Luck feature this morning.

I was brought up in Armley just after the war and I cannot remember this view, said to be of Armley Road. The reference to Low Moor Side is confusing me (I thought it was in Farnley) and I thought Well Garth Houses would be somewhere off Whitecote Lane in Bramley

The second is described as Leak Terrace. I only got to know Hunslet in the late 1960s when a lot of it had been demolished but I would have thought that this street was named after Leek in Staffordshire, rather an escape of water.

Hi Mick,

Low Moor was an area (south side), off Armley Road, opposite the Clock School and Canal Road. I suspect that the numbers in Armley Road were revised some time between 1914 and 1968 as the numbers do not coincide. I have looked at a 1914 street map and I have a 1968 Tellway which shows street junction numbers. The Leodis photograph is dated 1929 and coincide with the 1968 Tellway street numbers so maybe the streets numbers changed between 1914 and 1929.

Old maps show ‘malthouses’ in Armley Road. near to Crab Lane/Branch Road. This is the site of the flats at Westerly Croft. There is a Leodis photograph showing Wellgarth House at 161 Armley Road, known locally as the Maltkins (malthouses?). Wellgarth House is mentioned in your Leodis photograph and also in another Leodis photograph, from the opposite direction and showing the ‘Poor Rate Office’. I think that the Leodis photograph ‘Armley Road Nos. 165 -167’ was probably taken from the Canal Road/Ledgard Way area looking across Armley Road, south east, towards Armley Jail.

At first I thought that Leak Terrace was a typing error because of Leek Street (as in Leek Street Flats @ Hunslet Grange). I found that there was, in fact, a Leak Terrace which was situated off 12 Powell Street. Powell Street was between 122 Church Street and 14 Milner Street. All of these streets have been demolished but Powell Street met Church Street at where, nowadays, is the back of Lidl. Leak Terrace is not actually named on the map but is mentioned in my Tellway.

Thanks for all that.

Your map shows streets whose names were (briefly) resurrected in the Hunslet Grange flats: Milner Chase, Ledsham Dene, Askern Chase, Ashbourne Croft. The flats were known to some of the residents as the Leekies and they were indeed leaky.

Was there a Leek Street before the flats were built?

Hi Mick,

Leek Street was off Glasshouse Street (at 194 Hunslet Road). There are numerous photographs of Leek Street on Leodis.
