Gatehouses????

Does anyone know anything about the small but cute cottages are dotted around Leeds. They always reminded me of gingerbread houses. There's one on Otley Road, not far from Carnegie/Becketts park campus one on the way into Leeds centre (Burley Road?) another in Leeds 16, Otley Old Road. Are thay acually Gatehouses or are they something else entirely?

Hi Letty. I know what you mean! There's another fantastic little gingerbread house on the way to Leathley, via Pool Bank. I remember reading somewhere, that they remain from the days when large areas of land were owned by the gentry.The gate houses were usually occupied by the head gamekeeper, who protected the whole estate from poachers. So much has changed over the years, such as ownership boundaries, new buildings going up, etc, that they tend to end up in odd looking places! (If anyone knows any different to this, then please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I'm only going by what I once read and you know how inaccurate some information out there can be!!)

The 1906 OS map shows a Lodge, presumably at the entrance to the Beckett estate, now partly built on and partly Beckett Park, which I think is the one to which Letty referred.

There's a 'Ginger bread' house @ the top of Gledhow road road. Maybe Tesco's Ian might fancy a look @ it on his explores. I never have my camera when i pass there. Strange because i nearly always carry it

There are 2 on Burley Road.A friend of mine lived in the property at the top of Burley Hill Drive.It's a listed building and any exterior work has to be carried out by specialist craftsmen,as my friend found out to his cost and inconvenience.I was told it served as gatehouse for the building which is now the New Burley club and was the home of the Butler family who owned Kirkstall Forge.The 2nd gatehouse,on the left as you approach Leeds, proberblyserved what used to be the St. Annes(now demolished)

There's a lodge/gatehouse off Henconner Avenue Leeds 7. THere is a street called West Lodge Garden as well but I don't know what has happened to the House - there are some flats where you would expect a house off Stainbeck Lane. Unless the "big house" was near Quarrie Dene.

I live in one of the gatehouses in Calverley. We bought it 2.5 years ago and have been working on it ever since. I looked into the history of it and according to one census back in the 1800's a family of six lived in it, there are only two bedrooms!!! The actual house it was the gatehouse for was demolished in favour of bungalows for the aged. I cannot believe they knocked it down! The walls are incredibly thick but it is still freezing in winter. If I can work out how to attach a photo it the building you on the right that you can only just make out. This is the oldest photo I could find of it.

This used to be a gatehouse/house for caretaker for Moor Allerton Hall or known as "white house" to local people.I don't think it's so much in the style of a cottages but it stands out!
