Leeds Maps Resource

Just spent my lunch break in the excellent Leeds Museum (having a look at the Leeds Hippo!) and found a very useful resource in the Leeds gallery. This is an electronic collection of the maps covering Leeds going back through time. I was surprised that so many maps existed of Leeds through the ages. The screens allow you to scroll and zoom. There seems to be hundreds of different maps (if you go to the right menu). It's a great way of tracing Leeds features stepping back 10 years at a time. You can trace the dramatic changes that the railways brought. It would be great if photos from the Leodis site could be linked to the more detailed maps.

There is so much more that could be done with Leodis, some kind of Geo-tagging/date stamping would be great.

Google do it, they have a timeline function, its a lot of work to identify all the photos and map them though!

I'm doing things with Google Maps at the moment and there do seem to be ways of overlaying photos on Street View. I might have a play.s/

http://www.historypin.com is one such site. Its new and only 9 yet of leeds. Yet for leeds. You can search by date. Not sure i like the way it is arranged to use though

Its description notes that Lewis's is visible and also the Odeon cinema on New Briggate, but neither can be seen. I wonder if it is only showing part of a wider field-of-view that does have those places on? Though I had problems with the site it (and others such as Google Street view) must have great potential in future where I can see there will be virtual reality where we can walk through the old streets of Leeds (or at least those for which there are images). That would be a fascinating experince.
