The Black Horse on Mabgate/
A wonderful old building (look at those mini dormers!)and now the only pub on Mabgate.
I used to work nearby and occasionally went in for a pint - but always preferred the 'City of Mabgate'. - The Black Horse then was always the more 'down at heel'. its now having a refit and hopefully the new building in the area will give it a new lease of life.

There was a review of the Black Horse in the EP last year which revealed cask beer was a thing of the past.It was a case of smooth or lump it!

I notice the New Inn on Dewsbury Rd has a 'closed till further notice' sign hopefully only temporary. Not much sign of life at the Pointer in Sheepscar or 'Kirkstall lites' either

How long has the Kirkstall Lites been closed? God,it was a dump of a pub.I hated the name but I don't like to see the shutters going up.

Can anyone tell me the name of the pub that was on Park Lane opposite the college (back in the early 70's)?

At that time it was called 'the Rutland Hotel' - now called the 'Fox and Newt'
There's some pics and more info about it towards the bottom of page 4 of this thread.

When it was the "Hope and Anchor" it was notorious as being the haunt of the gay community - homosexuality then either being just legal or still illegal. There was an expose of this pub in one of the Sunday papers.

In March/April 1968 Leeds Utd played Rangers, I was in Leeds that day completing the purchase of my first house at a solicitor's office on Park Square. City Square was absolutely thronged with Rangers fans. They apparently ran riot and wrecked the "Hope and Anchor" Presumably that was why when refurbished it changed its name.
