They ground shared with Leeds United soon after LCC bought Elland Road from Leeds but as a condition of being awarded European Championship 1996 matches LCC, still the grounds owners at the time, had to agree to end RL being played regularly on Elland Road. LCC as a result of this agreed to provide the South Leeds stadium for Hunslet and other sporting events. Leeds United did buy back the ground at one stage possibly as part of that 96 agreement but it is under separate ownership again I believe. Six seasons at the dog track then we became homeless and played at Batley's ground until moving into Elland Road in 1982.Yes the council wanted the club out for the Euro's and built the south leeds stadium for Hunslet to have use of. The club said the ground was too small for if they hit the "big time" and the council said don't worry, we can expand the ground if needed. When the club made Super league that expansion was needed and the Council reneged on the verbal agreement and that just about did for the club. When it came to naming the stadium historicaly the John Charles name (with respect to him) was the ultimate insult to the club.Very close to folding a season or so back, and maybe will fold next time it gets tight money wise, the council stuffed them.......

I'm trying to expand on the information I have on my family tree. One line, Gabbitas, moved I think from St Helens to Doncaster with Pilkington Glass. I've found Brian Gabbitas who played for Hunslet in the 60s and I've been told he's a relative. Can anybody out there give me any information on him and his family.

If I remember correctly, 1982, the season LUFC were relegated was the same year Hunslet moved to Elland Road. That year the RL Challenge Cup Final replay was played at Elland Road between Hull FC and Widnes. They used the Hunslet posts. After that Elland Road became a regular venue for RL Test matches, Challenge Cup semis and Yorkshire Cup Finals. LUFC fans were constantly complaining that playing RL on the ground regularly spoiled it for soccer and in 1996 they got their way and Hunslet moved to the South Leeds. Of course Elland Road is still occasionally used for big RL games, but today's game is nothing like as damaging to the pitch as it must have been in the days of the competitive scrum.

Hunslet also played at Bramley's ground for a period.Check out the Miggy Railway thread for pictures taken close to ParksideThe pitch damage thing was a bit of a fallacy, it came from certain soccer managers resenting rugby being played on their grounds, they only ever complained when they lost and that got the soccer fans goingBesides it was something of a slur on such great groundsmen as the late Brian Cartwright.

My Dad used to take me to Parkside throughout the 50s. They were the best team in the world to me. Amongst others I've got an old 3d. programme for the Lazenby Cup game from Friday 14.8.1964 which might interest.Hunslet's team was: Langton, Griffiths, Shelton, Hood, Goodman, Preece, Watts, Bancroft, Prior, Eyre, Gunney, Taylor, Ramsey. The Leeds team included Barry Seabourne, a Parksider.Lucky Leeds won 18-2. Incidentally, a stand season ticket then would have set you back £3-3s-0d. P.S. Wigan were lucky at Wembley the following year as well!

In the Family Announcements section of the Yorkshire Evening Post today (June 15 2018) there is a sad announcement headed 'GUNNEY Geoff MBE Hunslet RLFC & Great Britain' who died on June 6 aged 84 "after a long illness".
