Town pubs of the late 70's/early 80's

Tom Collins was the bouncer at Sunset and Vine.Always a bit moody, you couldnt have a laugh with him. Other bouncers I remember from that time -Lloyd, who must have been in his 50's and 'Eric Bristow' at The Bank. KG at Jacomellis, he was a great bloke and I still see him today, works at Leeds station. There was also a bald bloke who looked a bit like Marvin Hagler, he used to work at the downstairs Yates's. All handy blokes and there was none of the current all black, smart casual look for bouncers then. It was strictly DJ and dickie bow!

Forgot to mention big Bernard who worked at Foxes then Mr Craigs--you didnt mess with that big fella....

A night out for me and my mates would involve The Bank, The Bond, The Observatory, Stumps, Lichfields (had a good juke box with stuff like The Smiths on it), The Boulevard, Sunset & Vine, Barneys (became Swans later on, I've no idea what it is now) and clubs would be either Ritzy's (or Confetti's as it was when I first started going), Mr Craigs or Madisons (slumming it, haha). you must be a similar age to me, that sounds just like my teenage years! i bought my first alcoholic drink in PJ's aged 13 years, and i looked it too. after yel it became the tunnel i thinkconfettis and mr craigs...i feel old

As a newcomer to the site I've not seen this thread before--but it doesn't half bring back memories.The first pubs I ever went in were the Central Market and the Ostlers......... when my uncle was the landlord.Scrumpies, obligatory for me on Saturday lunchtimes and nights in the late 80s, due to the number of friends I knew who went there, but I also remember it as The Central School of Dance, when you could have lessons in Ballroom some nights and it was a more general dancehall others. I believe the famous carpet originated in those days, it just never got replaced (or indeed cleaned). The number of city-centre pubs I performed in (oo-er missus!) over the years must amount to about 30%, but the two we were thrown out of were particularly memorable--The Whip for attracting female customers to a men-only pub, and the Marquis of Granby (a short notice dep job your honour, it wasn't my fault) for being bloody awful!I also remember the Central on Wellington Street as a great live music venue, with all the leatherette seats full of holes from stillletto-heeled feet standing on them for a decent view, and some great local bands.
