Strangely, for an anti-aircraft gun, it seems to have limited elevation, due to the armoured shield (a bit superfluous on a long-range anti-aircraft gun IMO.) The 40mm Bofors (like most AA guns) had an elevation of +90degrees (straight up) to -4degrees (for extremely low-level aircraft.)

If it is Soldiers field, and the gun is where the allotments are, the big house would be on West Avenue/Park Avenue, certainly there are enough big houses around there. The fence seen on the 1941 photo certainly matches the fence where the gun was.http://goo.gl/maps/lgBHThe big house?http://goo.gl/maps/NT3y

Wouldn't there be some tram poles/overhead wires in between and the house doesn't look quite right to me.

I wonder if the house behind is Beechwood, off Elmete Lane (one of the homes of the Lupton family, ancestors of Prince William's wife, ther former Kate Middleton). My father was part of the battery on Wellington Hill in the early part of WWII, and one of the few houses he could see belonged to his in-laws.
