A local seismogram of the major earthquake in the Pacific Ocean on August 19 2018.

Post by Leodian »

A major earthquake of magnitude 8.2 (that is extremely high) has been reported to have occurred today (August 19 2018) deep below the Pacific Ocean close to Fiji and Tonga. Occurring so deep (about 348 miles depth) it seems to have caused no damage but was widely felt. The event has been recorded in a seismogram at the British Geological Survey earthquake measuring station at Haverah Park near Beckwithshaw, near north Leeds. Hoping it will be of interest I have added the station's very long period chart to about 11:24 a.m. today (August 19 2018). Very long period components usually indicate an event a long way away (the short period chart was normal). Tonga and Fiji are very far way away from Leeds but earthquake detectors easily record such events.

@ LEODIAN. I assume you have missed the decimal point (about 348 miles depth) should read 3.48 miles

Pacific Ocean/Max depth 10,994 m or in old money 6.8 miles

'The earthquake struck just after midday Sunday and was almost 560 kilometers deep, the USGS said.'

Beneath the ocean floor, much deeper. Had it been shallower, there would have been a tsunami.

Hi Brunel :).

Sorry if I did not make it clear that the quake occurred at about 348 miles beneath the Pacific Ocean floor, so deep into the Earth.

Edit shortly after posting. Unknown to me harrym1byt's confirmatory post of the depth had already come in just as I posted mine.
