This article on the YEP website may be of interest.http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/n ... 1_3318546A CHANCE to see Leeds through the ages and in different lights is being offered by the city’s Civic Trust.Five guided 7pm supper walks led by the Trust will view the city during its Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian times and also explore its transformed Waterfront and musical history. The first on May 11 will be a foray into Georgian times when Leeds was home to gentlemen merchants and the town was the woollen cloth trading centre of the old West Riding. The tour will route past the renowned cloth halls, the merchant houses of Park Square and nearby streets, period church and chapels and as with the other 90 minute walks will concluded with supper in the Trust’s Heritage and Design Centre in The Calls. The May 20 walk will focus on mid-to-later 19th Century Leeds “discovering” the city’s great Victorian buildings including the Town Hall, Municipal Buildings, Corn Exchange, Leeds Institute, city arcades, Kirkgate Market and thoroughfares such as Boar Lane, City Square and Park Row.The third walk – five days later – will study how in the late 19th century much of the city centre was transformed with the Edwardian building boom which the recent redevelopment era echoes. Walkers will learn how a fifth of the centre was rebuilt in flamboyant style with the creation of Kirkgate Market, County Arcade, City Square and great parts of Vicar Lane, Briggate, Duncan Street and East Parade.Wednesday June 16 will see Trust guests viewing the major changes and redevelopment of the city centre waterfront since the mid-to-late 1990s.This tour will introduce people to Leeds’ waterfront heritage, as well as the on-going continual changesThe musical associations of the city will be recalled in the fifth and final walk on June 22. Participants will learn of the splendid balls held in the Georgian Assembly Rooms. They will hear of the Singing Room at the Scarbrough Hotel where acts auditioned for the City Varieties and how Franz Liszt gave a virtuoso performance at the Music Hall in Albion Street. The Leeds Musical Festivals held at the Town Hall which featured lumini such as Sir Arthur Sullivan and Dvorak will also be recalled.Trust director, Kevin Grady said: “These guided supper walks are a real eye-opener revealing both the fascinating history of our city and introducing people to the rapid change which it is undergoing.”The walks, costing £9 including supper, are booked in advance by calling 0113 2439594.
