It was downstairs near the corner of Boar Lane and the little street behind Woolworths. It used to be a waxworks and when I started going there, it was a place only for teddy boys and rockers. They only played rock and roll, mainly Eddie Cochrane, Elvis, Gene Vincent type stuff. The guys wore brothel creepers, drainpipe trousers and velvet collared coats or leather jackets. It was a real throwback to the 50's. The bouncer was a black guy called Willie, he had a huge brother called Jimmy. It was scary place really, you never looked at anyone....... That's the place that later became Scrumpies.

David Raven wrote: Most of my clubbing seems to have been in the 'alternative music' clubs...Apart from the incomparable and much lamented Phono, we also frequented Scrumpies when we fancied rock not punk/goth.Ricky's (behind the Merrion centre) had an 'alternative' night on a Sunday (£1 a pint for lager!). Twilight Square opened for a while in a basement near the train station (underneath the 'Observatory?).I'm struggling to remember the other clubs/nights... Eeee, now I'm feeling my age CheersDave Funny seeing nostalgic quotes about £1 a pint a lager. Definitely not '60s prices. Try 2/6d for a pint of Double Diamond in the Horse and Trumpet. LOL.Another place I went to once (I wasn't tidy enough to be a mod) was the BG (BeeGee) short for Blue Gardenia. It was in the dead end street opposite the old C&A on Boar Lane. It really catered for the Mods and the Northern Soul movement. They also had live bands competing with the Mecca, Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band, Drifters, Jimmy Cliff all played there.

What about Sedans at the Windmill in Seacroft ? that used to be my regular after being at the Travellers, Station and Lion and Lamb and after trekking round the Thorner/collingham/scholes pubs - anybody remember I think it was called the Stables at ScholesI used to go Ritzy's, the Warehouse and occasionally Scrumpies and martines in town and TC's (usually when we were all completely wrecked and couldn't get in anywhere else!) , and Upstairs Downstairs at Armley as well, god the memories !!

You are all so young on here..never heard of half the clubs mentioned,. How about The Majestic in City Square (met my husband there) The Capital at Meanwood, Mecca in the Mecca arcade (Jimmy Savilles days) Used to go there in my lunch hour. I also went to Hernandos, already mentioned in Harehills and the Strega. My mother used to work at Heptons so we also got free entry to the Starlight Roof on York Road/Harehills Lane. There was another one in Leeds down a street opposite Schofields over a furniture shop...anyone remember the name?

There was a disco above the rolarena (now a ytv buiding) on kirkstall rd who's name escapes me, we were too young to get in but our club WAS the roller rink. waiting for the bouncers to turn round so we could glide into the bar upstairs for half of D.D. you could follow a bird for 3 hours solid in those days, sometimes they didn't even notice! i think the d.j was called simon peters perhaps. white suit? speed sessions with Rocking Goose and if you got lucky an arm in arm romantic skate to 'I'm just a lonely boy. lonely and blue'i saw mungo jerry there, my mate missed the concert 'cos he had to get the last bus home before they came on.some of the older guys, rockers and greasers, used to bop to the rock n roll with their skates on. blimmin' rebels!

The first place I ever got in (aged 14, oh my god) was Panama Joes, which later became Sam Miguels and then Yel. We then graduated to The News (aged 15) which, if I remember correctly, did not have a revolving dance floor when it was The News, I believe that came into play when it became Planet Earth. I spent a lot of Friday nights in The News so I think I'd recall the dance floor. Used to go to Confettis, which then became Ritzy's. I remember the queues being so long they stretched right down to Chaplins. Also Mister Craigs. I have a scar on my shin from walking into one of the low, black tables they had in there on the black carpet which made them practically invisible (when you'd had a few!). I also used to frequent The Gallery which became the Pleasure Rooms and then there was that all night place which used to open at 2.00am called the Bedrooms (on Lady Lane if my memory serves me right, it was all a bit addled in those heady days). Sometimes we used to go to Madisons (normally on a Thursday for some reason) and I always used to think that a nightclub with windows was somehow not quite right........Didn't the Dharbar Indian restaurant on Kirkgate used to be a nightclub, way before my time but I remember as a child seeing it being called Strawberry Affaire and then (or maybe before) Club Damian? Does anyone remember Soames Casino being on the corner of the market? Didn't that site become Primo's II?Admit it, who ever went to Spooks? I went in once against my better judgement. To jog the memories it was situated above Big Lils. Not my scene at all, I was in fear of my life. By the way, there isn't anything in Scholes called The Stables - there's The Buffers and The Barleycorn. The Buffers was always the livelier pub of the two but even though I am Scholes born and bred I never drank in there, preferred the bright lights of town!

Does anyone remember the Take Five club???It was somewhere in the New Briggate area of Leeds, I went there in/around 1969/70. I seem to remember it was owned by the composer of the tune of the same name (although it could have been a rumour!)
Born in East leeds, then lived in Halton and aged 20 moved to Tyneside

That would be Dave Brubeck, or his saxophonist, Paul Desmond, according to wikipedia. I'd say it unlikely, though not impossible, that either Californian had anything to do with ownership of a nightclub in Leeds
