Does anyone know the actual location of Farnley Wood where the conspirators got nabbed in 1663 ?On the net it ranges from Green Lane Wortley to Guildersome to Morley and points in between.

If you look on the old maps, just behind and to the west of where Ring Lighting is Gelderd Road is where Farnley Wood was. There is an inscription on the maps that says "Site of the Farnely Wood Plot" and mentions the date.I have a copy of it but cannot find it. Once I do I'll post it. apparently this area was full of trees years ago and this is where the conspiritors hatvched their plan. There is a thread on it here somewhere...Look on http://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messag ... ighLight=1 at the post by Chris_w, Posted on: 27-Apr-2007 17:36:41. It was kind of just North West of where this photo is.

I've been reading a book about the Stuarts, and whilst the Farnley Wood Plot is not mentioned specifially apparently it was not unique in the reign of Charles II. There were alleged plots by Puritans/Presbyterians and also alleged plots by Catholics. more herehttp://www.bbc.co.uk/legacies/myths_legends/en ... htmlMorley was a hotbed of Non-conformity - St Mary's Church stands on the site of Morley Old Chapel (Morley did not have a parish church in those days - it was in the parish of Batley) The church is believed to be unique in that it did not return to the Anglican faith at the Restoration. Whilst the actual church is closed today - St Marys remains URC place of worship.

If you go to http://www.british-history.ac.uk/mapshe ... 40&oy=2283 then this shows 1852 map with Farnley wood , and in the centre it states that this is the scene of the Farnley wood plot. below the map you can alter zoom level (though resolutiion goes to pot) to see where it is wrt gildersome etc
