I remember a story concerning Esholt sewage works. Apparently, years ago when a large new inlet tunnel was opened, some local dignitaries were driven through it in a Model T Ford or suchlike. As the band finished playing, the dignitary's wife (who liked a tipple or two) stood up in the back of the car, and announced to the gathered crowd, "Gentlemen...your first consignment of s**t has arrived!"

It will be interesting to see what if any remnants of track are exposed by the roadworks on the bottom end of Pontefract Lane. They workmen are currently digging exactly where the Paddy line was routed. I seem to remember years ago that Cattons had the lines still in place at their entrance to the site running through the tarmac.

I had a snoop around the Waterloo Colliery line route early in the summer, conscious that the new road would obliterate most of the remains. I did notice what looked like an exposed rail at the entrance of one of the buildings (opposite the former fruit market) but it was just a piece of metal. Further along to the east there had been a lot of excavation for drains and you could make out the ashy base of the trackbed in places.Even further down past the car auction a bridge abutment is still in place where the line once crossed a small beck (possibly Wyke Beck?).There's some old photos of the line on Flickr if you search for them, these two are particularly good:http://www.flickr.com/photos/thanoz/209 ... 345450259/

Great pictures, I was messing with google earth tonight and managed to trace the route of one of the branches of the Waterloo Main railway. It is the one that branched from Pontefract Lane at Cross Green down towards the entrance to the Sewage Works on Knostrop Lane. I can't quite make out whether it went over or under Knostrop Lane at the entrance, but you can follow the route through the old Greyhound Training site to the sidings at Hunslet Where it goes under the main railway close to the buffers.
