Yeah that sub station is still there geoff. The shelter was more behind it. It was a trench shelter so only the earth mound & entrance was visible. If you have a look at Google earth you can clearly see the shape of it. If you haven't already got it i recomend it. It's great for exploring Leeds old ruin's. zoom in & out & even tilt the view. http://earth.google.com/

Another not very well known about shelter was undernearth the old toilets & ladies waiting room in the bus station. Remember the days when leeds buses actually used the place?. I can't have been in there more than 3 times since it's been rebuilt. As you came from the market into the bus station there was the metal door that never opened-That lead down to the shelter & then it was the Gents. Then it was the ladies curved waiting room & the old kiosk. The shelter had a capacity for 400 people & was built with the station in 1938. This pic shows the bunker been built. This is another Leeds war relic only recently lost!

You should be able to see the outline there. Can you Geoff? Try the Google earth & see for yourself. You could be stood on a piece of grass that looks as smooth as a snooker table but when the archiologists use arial shots you can see the outline of old roman walls & encampements from thousands of years ago. The king lane shelter was built for the kids moved out of the city. I don't know if that meant they went to school there or had been evacuated. It was certainly more in the sticks than it is today.

That building looks very familiar and I'm now racking my brains to try and remember where I have seen it or something similar. There is an old looking installation on the road out of the other side of Midgeley near Halifax, which resembles this (I know that's not Leeds!). But when I asked if it was something military, I was told it was a communications centre, possibly something connected with weather reporting?!! It is a very secure area, with the entrance fenced off and a government warning notice?!

I always think phrases like 'Communications Centre' are probably convenient 'half truths', in the sense that bunkers doubtless did have a lot of 'communications' facilities in them... A nuclear bunker, could therefore quite legitimately be described as a very, very, very secure Communications Centre.
