Canon Jackson Memorial Sunday Schools 1909

Post by Leodian »

When on Cross York Street yesterday (November 19 2014) I happened to notice a 'Canon Jackson Memorial Sunday Schools 1909' carved into a building. Above it was a dedication stone dated November 14 1908. Both items are in very good condition so they (particularly the dedication stone) might have been recently renovated. I have not been able to readily find much information on Canon Jackson but I did find this item in a 'Mocavo UK a findmypast company' website which does mention the dedication and the building and that the Canon's name is Edward Jackson. This is a link to that item:- http://www.mocavo.co.uk/Sketches-of-the ... 726087/424

I have attached photos that I took showing the name on the building and a close-up of the dedication stone.

Cheers uncle mick for that excellent information. :)

Does anyone know if Canon Jackson's vault is still intact at Lawnswood Cemetery :?:

Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

Thanks Geordie-exile and buffaloskinner for those interesting links. :)

Probably to my shame I had not knowingly heard of Canon Jackson before I saw his name on the building. From information brought up through links he seems to have been a very good man. Being almost soon forgotten is though perhaps the fate of all of us except for the most famous or infamous.
