Yes those biscuits I'm thinking of are probably what triggered hyperactivity in kids!
Come to think of that, there weren't many 'labels' either when I was a kid! Hyperactivity? We just had boundless energy! And none of this "HDTV" (!!!) either, we were just plain, ordinary naughty!!!
Who remembers a kid with "ADD" from their childhood? Me and all my mates had proper dinners every night, meat, potatoes and two veg. So could it be that the constant need these days for ready meals and drive thru burger places, has had an adverse effect on the children of today? I was about 12 when I first had a Macca D's! And after that, if we ever had one, which was not very often, it was a treat. It seems that these days, proper home cooked dinners and sunday roasts are a treat! And how sad is that? |
I think the ADD kids when I was at school were ones who were perpetually in trouble - the ones who had to sit in the hall alone and do work set by the headmaster. The ones who had the hyperactivity knocked out of them by teachers who didn't spare the rod.

It was a Bernard Manning joke at around the time of Peter Adamsons trial for certain allegations...

Guineas. Before decimalisation, shops selling electrical goods or furniture - items with a high ticket value would be priced in guineas - a guinea was 21 shillings - £1.05. Our first telly when I was a kid came from Currys on Vicar Lane and cost (I think) 89 gns. (lotta money then!)

You don't see pram races any more. I remember as a kid watching the one at Garforth. People used to get dressed up and basically do a pub crawl and raise money for charity on the way round.
There used to be one at Bramley as well. I think it ran along Bramley Town street.

Yeah Trojan, I would also have to be the one in the pram or trolley. Especially after a few drinks

Littlewoods pools adverts on the sides of buses between the lower and upper decks. People dreamed of winning 75 grand then Viv Nicholson broke the mould.

Don't ask me how I know but i'm pretty sure the white poo was from the calcium intake of the dog as it decomposed (white poo is not fresh poo) However since giving dogs a bone is less common now, so too is the appearance of white poo - However I am sure if you search dog bins that have not been emptied in awhile then you may find what you are looking for! Thank you for reading

Funny that. My wife said she saw a jay today at the White Rose Centre. I've seen quite a few on my travels recently, prior to that I'd only ever seen one - at the big lay-by at Scotch Corner. Perhaps they are becoming more common.

In the hot summer and drought of 1959 (I think) there was a craze for "ginger beer plants" you put yeast and sugar in a jar, covered it with water ( I think) and then put equal parts of sugar and ginger in every day for a week, then you split it in two, diluted the liquor with water and lemon juice and bottled it to allow it to develop a sparkle - many burst bottles in our cellar due to using the incorrect bottles We had a try a couple of year ago but it was only moderately successful. In 1959 when it transpired that the ginger beer was slightly alcoholic my methodist family and friends abandoned the practice (or said they did) and I've never recovered the recipe properly. Anyway you never see them now to be on topic!

you had to strain it through muslin or more commonly a nylon stocking. 1959 was a classic summer to be a kid in 1976 ws a c;assic summer to be a young adult in.
