Speaking of signs, why does the sign in the opening credits of Emmerdale say "Yorkshire W.R." when it's supposed to be set in the Dales? "N.R." surely?
dale means valley,so it can be anywhere in the county of God...airedale for instance.....is the leeds area in the north riding.?....riding is a derivative of 'thriding'...norse for third...ie north, east and west ridings.....ok,back on thread now people...

Ha Ha! My late husband worked for the gas board and all this is a good representation of how things have ended up,gone are the days when two blokes turned up in a van to do a job.It makes me wonder how we all survived before health and safety!

Probably not what you mean, but you've reminded me of some with coloured icing-they had a 'monster' theme with the colours having different names/characters.

Must have been mid 70s? My friend's mum bought them - remember snacking now while we were playing with Pippa,Tammy et al!!

it's anywhere in the aire valley, but yes sir...i concur,it doth runneth through the pagan lands of castleford.the aire and calder navigation was of course cut so that more godly folk could avoid said areas, alas they must sail through said lands, although only partialy.

Speaking of signs, why does the sign in the opening credits of Emmerdale say "Yorkshire W.R." when it's supposed to be set in the Dales? "N.R." surely?

The majority of what I would class as 'The Dales' -
(eg, Grassington, Skipton, Sedbergh, Malham, Buckden, Kirby Lonsdale, Addingham, Clapham, Ingleton ,Settle,Dent etc etc) are in the West Riding!

The Emmerdale designer was right, then. My mistake.

I used to work with a bloke who had either a Knux or a Picnic with his tea on a morning - the mouthpiece of his phone was spattered with bits of them Angry

Do they still make Picnics? They certainly don't make Bar Six which was Cadbury's attempt at Kit Kat, I prefer dark chocolate, but I like a Kit Kat now and then -even a milk one - but (and this isn't because I'm from Yorkshire) I prefer Rowntrees (Nestles) chocolate to Cadbury's any day - it seems more chocolatey to me.
I remember my dad saying that up to the thirties Rowntrees were the market leaders in chocolate in this country and then there was some sort of scare and Cadbury's took over.
Helen says they don't make Gypsy Creams any more either - although Richard Whiteley was always going on about them - I miss Richard Angry That's something else you don't see any more - a decent presenter on Countdown.

Do they still do 'Old Jamaica' chocolate, the one that had a rum flavoured centre ? I can still picture the pirate in the advert saying, " Old Jamaica, laced with Jamaica rum flavour, Ahhharr". If I remember correctly it also had raisins in it as well.

The advert for that always used to crease me pirate type voice:

"Old Jamaicy, laced with Jamaica rum (pause) flavour,"
Why are pirates called pirates?
Because they aaargh!

Remember when Smarties came in a large box as well as a tube? Usually sold in cinemas. There was an extra large tube at Christmas as well. I think Terry's fruit pastilles came in a large box, too.

Yes those biscuits I'm thinking of are probably what triggered hyperactivity in kids!

Come to think of that, there weren't many 'labels' either when I was a kid! Hyperactivity? We just had boundless energy! And none of this "HDTV" (!!!) either, we were just plain, ordinary naughty!!!

Who remembers a kid with "ADD" from their childhood? Me and all my mates had proper dinners every night, meat, potatoes and two veg. So could it be that the constant need these days for ready meals and drive thru burger places, has had an adverse effect on the children of today? I was about 12 when I first had a Macca D's! And after that, if we ever had one, which was not very often, it was a treat. It seems that these days, proper home cooked dinners and sunday roasts are a treat! And how sad is that?
