For Uno Hoo: I live in Cubelles, on the coast, just over half way between Barcelona and Tarragona. For Lilysmum: I believe the Chemists you are talking about were known as Dispensing Chemists. Correct me if I am wrong. |
Not a part of Spain I know, Peter. I'm familiar with a part of Southern Andalucia where lots of Brits have gone to live. Just wondered if you were around there and we might have met.

Kaolin and Morphine - cured stomach cramps and diarhoea, much more effective than some of these over-the-counter 'don't spoil your day' preparations, they cost a fortune too.. Maybe we should reinvent some of these olde things. |
Opium paralyses the gut and presumably kaolin - which is chalk bungs it up. If I have diarrhoea I starve myself and drink plenty of liquid - it usually works in about 24 hours.
Spot-on Trojan - kept in a large glass bottle in the Chemist's back room, creamy white chalk sediment with brown liquor above, good shake and decanted to order!

I hope this isn't a repeat as I can't go through the whole topic now, but does anyone remember "ENERGEN ROLLS" ?? They were in a blue and white carton and were small white bread rolls but were incredibly light and flaky. They were admittedly delicious - not at all "filling"- but I very much doubt if they bestowed the miraculous improvement in health and stamina that was claimed on the packet. I'm going back around sixty years or so. |
MY auntie used to have them, their consistency was like cotton wool. Nimble bread was made on the same principle - presumably pumped full of air. |
My mother had a battle with her weight all her life, unlike my father who always looks like a Belsen inmate despite shovelling food down. She had Energen Rolls for years. I quite liked them too, Blakey, but also agree that their texture was like cottonwool. Funny how both descriptions can be accurate. Can't say they were effective in weight loss, though. Mum remained a bit on the hefty side. I doubt my father carried her over the threshold when they married.
She probably carried him.

The thing I did seen on Thursday at Teple Newsam!! and may never see again was a guy with a camera on a tripod with a piece of material over the camera and his head. Subject seemed strange as well. It was aimed at a well known fly tipping area with a gate and warning sign re fly tipping.

It's probably not all that strange. You can't see the LCD screen of digital cameras well in broad daylight, so the chappie probably covered his head and camera for that reason.

I remember the guy who used to sell the Evening Post on the corner of Commercial Street and Lands Lane outside Clintons. He always used to shout "I'm having a terrible day" and "I've got loads left, so help me get rid of 'em"

Surely yo mean charcuterie There are still some in Wakey I think Hoffmans and Oesterleins, I think there may be some in Leeds market. When I worked in Cas I used to go to a brilliant old fashioned one called Matthews. Roast pork sanwiches with dripping, chitterlings, something called "pigs bag" But it's gone.

Anyone remeber those troangular orange drinks, you used to get them frozen and you'd suck out all the ice cold goodness flavour.
Always used to get one at the Saturday matinee at the Lounge in Headingly.
I don't remember any other flavour, always orange and it left your tongue with a dyed orange look.
Haven't seen them for years, when did they disappear, did they ever disappear, what happened to them?

Jubbly, and you still get them in a mini- version I preferred the one made by Barr's.Better orange juice and in the same type of carton that you get milk in. Used to sit with it on our laps with it wrapped in a tea towel, scooping the ice out with a teaspoon.

There is a butchers in Leeds market where you can still get savoury ducks. It's on the opposite side of the row to the fishmongers stalls.

Thank Goodness!
Nostalgia is great, but it's right that we're reminded of the downside now and again. Some humility is good for the soul!
