Spotter and predictor operators at a 4.5-inch anti-aircraft gun site in Leeds, 20 March 1941.

4.5-inch anti-aircraft gun, Leeds, 20 March 1941.

Does anyone know where? I don't by the way.

I zoomed in 400% on top photo.
Has a look of clipped parkland with a big house? Top right(see capture).

Possibly miles off, but is it Red Hall in the background, placing the gun near the current Ring Road and it's junction with Wetherby Road?

I seem to recall an old thread mentioning there were AA guns stationed out that way...

Don't know it helps much but interesting.

Seems that 'Leeds' may have been used for a wider area:

Across Soldiers field?

The big house being on Old Park Road?

It would make sense having ack ack guns there with the Blackburn factory producing air craft nearby on Roundhay Road.

Dewsbury Rd area ? Woodhouse Moor ? Otley Chevin ? (I'm not just guessing. I am reading where the gun sites were located).

It does have a look of Otley Chevin to me.
Strangely, for an anti-aircraft gun, it seems to have limited elevation, due to the armoured shield (a bit superfluous on a long-range anti-aircraft gun IMO.) The 40mm Bofors (like most AA guns) had an elevation of +90degrees (straight up) to -4degrees (for extremely low-level aircraft.)

Thanks for the confirmation Chameleon, I thought there might have been a gun stationed there. If it is Soldiers field, and the gun is where the allotments are, the big house would be on West Avenue/Park Avenue, certainly there are enough big houses around there.

The fence seen on the 1941 photo certainly matches the fence where the gun was.

It's a little further over than your streetview image Phill and quite descrete.

Wouldn't there be some tram poles/overhead wires in between and the house doesn't look quite right to me.

I wonder if the house behind is Beechwood, off Elmete Lane (one of the homes of the Lupton family, ancestors of Prince William's wife, ther former Kate Middleton).
My father was part of the battery on Wellington Hill in the early part of WWII, and one of the few houses he could see belonged to his in-laws.
