Mr Alan Holiday is the rider, son of the owner of The Horsforth Steam Laundry, which is not too far from the picture house!

Thanks 4 that Rangie!
We used to use Horsforth laundry when we lived
in the Rosebanks. That's after Mum 'fell out' with
Bramley Steam Laundry! (Horsforth were 1 penny cheaper)!
Anyone remember Kit Wong's Chinese Laundry
on Burley Road? They were very good but a bit dearer
than the BSL and HL if you needed a clean shirt in a hurry!
The Family lived in Rosebank View,I seem to remember.
Arry
ps we do us' own now!

I used to go to the Dominion Cinema in Chapel Allerton with my grandmother, usually to see Walt Disney films at Easter. It is now a housing estate.
I also remember going to the Capitol Cinema in Meanwood to see Dalek Invasion Earth in 1965. I think it closed not long after and became a bingo hall. It is probably demolished now. There was a ballroom attached.

Out of interest, this may be common knowledge, but I just found there is a little-used forum at leodis. If you ignore the odd bit of spam, you might find things of passing interest. http://pub5.bravenet.com/forum/393078274

There's still one or two threads of interest though, even if it's as dead as a Norwegian Blue.

Gonna try and post a cinema pic that
I found in a book called 'Seems Like
Yesterday' published by the
Burley Oral History Group.
It's the old Burley Bughutch and I've done a bit
of 'Scrattin' in there in the 30's and 40's!
Here goes nothin!

That forum is dead for a start. One post this year apart from the spam. I don't know who the creator was though.

Has he really shuffled off this mortal coil, rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible?

I think we should be told.

Scandy

thanks very much for Malvern pic..Brings back some good memories..

as a beeston born and bred,i used to go there regular..Wasnt owned by a chain..the owner was there every night..he took a great
pride in his cinema...kept good order and ejected the "riff raff"..but let me and my pals in..We were late teens..my friends..

I remember the "duke of York" pub opposite..we went in there before or after the show

Thanks so much to all who send pictures in

Thanks Parky,(Arry Awk ere! provider of the fotos!)
My young son assistant and snap adjuster(Scandy) posted the Malvern for me! Glad it brought back some memories. Actually, I was only in there once on a Saturday afternoon special performance
of 'Desert Victory' in 1942!!! As a member of the Army cadets,
the powers that be thought it was a good idea to arouse the
latent partiotism in us lads of the West Yorks Cadet battalion
to see how Monty sorted Rommel out at El Alamein! (Jolly inspiring film but I joined the RAF instead!)
What the War Dept. didn't bank on was one our (Blenheim Unit)lads, found 'getting across' a very sexy usherette on the back row!!!
She was sacked and our oppo was 'drummed out' of the cadets on the next parade! Just for doin' what comes naturally! Probably
that's why the strict manager you mention would brook no
hanky panky in future performances! I think Monty would have been proud!
I think the Duke was jampacked with under age cadets afterwards
so our squad adjourned to the Eldon which was nearest to Blenheim school!
Thanks Parksider
Cheers

Was the Lyceum located where the Petrol Station is now on Cardigan Road? That's the only site I can think of which has that road layout.

Hi jf
Not certain,as I haven't been up Cardi' Rd
for years but the Lyceum was on the junction with
Thornville Rd and opposite the Burley Library.

Burley Lodge Rd and Alexandra Rd both ended
on Thornville Rd, right opposite the cinema.
Hope that helps?
