I've yet to see anyone have anything good to say about this ''off your trolley'' scheme for Leeds.

I tell a small fib, there is ONE comment in the Y.E.P that thinks they are ok, all the rest are full of ridicule, contempt and total scorn for it

It seems that the city council are appallingly out of touch with everything. I got a little bit involved with the elected mayor campaign and the pro argument, from a couple of reluctant councillors, seemed to be that it would make the city more attractive for investment. Not for its inhabitants, apparently. But then again, we need to tell the council what we want or they won't pay attention. Turnout in the local election in May was, like almost everywhere else, 31%.

The trolleybus plan has gone very monorail, not least because the North Line has lost a lot of its purpose if Bodington Hall is closing, and there's no good reason to run trolleybuses on the Park and Ride. If Metro succeed being able to manage contracts, they may be able to get a service provider who can run services on those routes without First's constant excuse making and need for capital expenditure like the guided bus lanes.

Why would you object to it? The money doesn't get re-allocated to build more buses, or trams, or orphanages - if Leeds doesn't spend it, it goes back into the national pot and gets given to some other city for their project.

I agree that Leeds is hard done by at a national level, and I appreciate that, in people's opinion NGT *might* not be the best solution, but I really don't understand the "cut your nose off to spite you face" attitude on this whole thread. Why would you turn investment away from your city?

The reason why I'd object to it is because we'd never get any decent transport scheme if we end up with this pile of junk, were stuck with that forever, that would be the biggest mistake this city will ever make.

I'd rather the money got waisted on anything, squander it, burn it, but don't spend it on off your trolley.

In this case nothing is far better than something just for the sake of something.

Phil, that's not a logical statement. It doesn't get put in a bank account, waiting for grow to £500m so we can have trams in 2060. It goes to someone else.

And why does it preclude us getting anything additional in the future? What are you hoping for?

There's lots going on - the ITA has given support for Quality Contracts for buses, there's HS2 investment, along with re-franchising of the local rail providers in the next couple of years.

Things move (probably too) slowly, but in times when investment is scarce, I think it's wrong to be sneering at funding that we can attract.

Really it's an easy to understand thing, if we get this we get nothing else.

I for one am fed up with seeing other Cities miles ahead of Leeds, if they can do it then why can't we?

We've been fobbed off with half do measures for decades, it's taken this long to get a decent concert arena. Leeds is a joke, and this is another pile of rubbish were been fobbed off with!

The argument to get any kind of decent transport system once this is in place, well you've more chance of meeting Elvis down the chip shop Regular Smiley

It's funding they are giving us to shut us up so they don't have to pay more, that's the only reason we would get it, so we get a useless cheap transport system, while other cities get the real deal.

What does a trolley bus do that a bus can't?

Nothing.... even less than a bus in all honesty, it's tied to the wires like a baby clutching mothers apron string, then why waist millions on the thing????

I don't believe there is a "something else". What is it? A tram? been there, couldn't afford the £500m. Look at Edinburgh. Are they happy with their tram? An underground, a monorail, jet packs for all?

Maybe if the NGT scheme goes in smoothly (granted, that's a big maybe), more schemes are approved?

I don't disagree with your sentiment on the funding in Leeds being a joke. See the news on the LGI for more of it, but I do believe that some investment is better than none. If nothing else, it will create jobs in the construction and maybe an improvment in services.

I can see we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one though, time will tell whether either of us change our minds :-)

Edit - just seen your additional comment - I imagine it'll be to do with lowering carbon emissions, though I appreciate that electricity has to be generated somewhere. And to be fair, you could level the "wire" accusation at the trams.

You know sometimes to get what you want, better yourself or improve you have no option to hold back, no matter how hard or tempting it is.

Why push early for things just to make sure you get something and don't loose out? You never put a house up for sale at reduced level, it always goes on the market with a well marked up price, if anyone is daft enough to buy it, then your laughing.

It's just the same in life, never settle for second best for anything.

What right minded professionals would contemplate building a system which has never been successful in its entirety anywhere. A bus with a a electric motor. Oh! could we achieve this without the massive infrastructure needed, something like a hybrid that the make nowadays, na too simple.

Get real this is a 21st century city, we need an integrated city wide transport system which meets the needs of commuters and business alike.

My councilor is going to get some earache from me. Why do we let lay men make decisions like this. (rant over)

Glad everyone had a trolley good laugh. There even making the awful addition to the 3 letter acronym. Worsts FTR (Far too Ridiculous.) Now it's NGT (Never Goes There.) So if you live in the Holt Park to Stourton area's get ready for years of disruption.

Why is this worse than a hybrid bus.

1. Power supplies for the overhead lines. This will require sub stations, neutral sections and a grid control. Roads with masses of services dug up to put in more cables. More for signalling and more for all the repairs when gas, water and electricity are damaged.

2. Overheads need supports, more road furniture!

3. Seen the route

So Millennium Square will have to be dug up to have this run, against traffic along Cookridge Street. DOH! In the centre it will run against traffic and cause chaos! And is Leeds University and Leeds Metropolitan University going to pay for this chaos. It seems it is just for students!!

4. Signalling. This will require new signalling to be installed and a control room for the system. Plus the usual helpdesk for all the systems installed.

Crazy... really crazy... Pass me my jet pack please...

If trolley buses are so good, why have Manchester, Nottingham, Birmingham, Croyden, and Sheffield not gone for trolley buses instead of trams?

Because they have no advantages over diesel buses except they run on electricity, they need double amount of overhead wiring that trams require.

I have travelled all over Europe, trolley bus systems are been closed down and replaced with tram systems. There are very few trolley bus systems left in Europe.

Bradford trolley bus system closed in the early seventies because they could get spares, and also because West Yorkshire Metro formed in 1974 did not want to takeover "a none standard system". So they will now will create a non standard dying out system which in 5 to 10 years will not be able get spares.

Just heard while typing this, that the Leeds has been given the go ahead for the scheme (BBC)

We'll have to put up with Council officials gloating how they've achieved something great and amazing for the City for days now, we'll here all the 'great benefit' rhetoric and propaganda mantra.

They'll be like kids who's got a new toy, personally I think they want sacking as not fit for purpose!!

I've still never been on a purple slug bus so I think I best hurry before they are history. I wonder if the trolly bus scheme goes ahead and then fails if people will be looking back nostalgically to the purple slugs! I think what Leeds needs is a massive fleet of hand powered rickshaws taking people to and from where they want! Regular Smiley
