Another old classic has finally hit the dust,The Station in Hunslet at the bottom of Old Run Road. Shutters up on all the windows and doors, can't see this place opening as a pub again now,due to it's position it will probably be turned into offices or knocked down. Used to have some good nights in here and it was always a regular stop off and meeting place for anyone (supporters and players)going to see Hunslet rlfc/Hunslet Hawks play. |
I think you mean 'the Engine' here's a pic I took of it last summer. |
I don't know why i put The Station,i drive past it every night.
Nice pic' though.

Does anyone remember a pub called The Highfield in Beeston just off Malvern Road.
My Great Gran Sarah Brogden (remarried name, originally Stones)and her husband Joe ran the pub in the mid 60s.
I've been told that she was the first female president of the Licenced Victuallers Association and Yorkshire Womens Darts Champion but i'm not sure were to look to get written proof of this.
My ma used to work behind the bar in the Highfield and used to take me in their when i was a little sprog, she also worked behind the bar in The Blue Ball, which i think was next to The White Hart on Town Street.
I have a few family pic's from inside the Highfield and there are some from outside on Leodis.
If anyone has any memories of the pub or my great gran (or the Blue Ball) it would be appreciated.

Well, that one's gone for good - wife's car parked straight opposite in the Hospital carpark! (Home now though with aged Mum).
I wonder if Sky might mention the skulls in return for the links.....?

Certainly looks as though this pub will not open again, most of the top half of the building is gone. The BBC have just said that the injuries were fairly minor, thankfully.
Thanks for identifying my photo Croggy, Sky used my picture of the pub sign in their report mentioned above.

I have to admit I dont remember this - but I've been told,on good authority that this building (that used to be Thornton's chocolate shop) on Albion Street used to be a pub called the 'Mitre' You can see where a sign might have been fixed. It was a 'gay bar' apparently! |
When was this then? I don't remember it from the early 70s

As I drove through Halton/Whitkirk on my way back to 'The land that time forgot' in the NE, I noticed that the Traveller's was all boarded up in Halton. I used to go in there with my father in the early 90's. Although I think it went downhill after that due to some rather unsavoury punters! Then to cap it all I got to the Brown Cow in Whitkirk and the lovely brickwork had been painted over and it was called The Brown Cow and Dragon, which I think was a restaurant, but I was driving past.
The Woodman in Halton was still there but it looked a little shabby. I used to see Jack Charlton and Billy bremner in there 'training' hard on the John Smiths hand pulled and a packet of Bensons in c1968 and they used to have a great sing song on a Sunday with a lady playing the piano and as we said then "The oldies are singing along, lets push off to The Devon instead" Now of course I am one of the oldies!!
The Irwin Arms has also gone in Halton and I think it is a Lidl? I used to go in there sometimes as well. It was always a rough and ready place and could always turn into a pint and a fight evening, but that was usually in the music room and the bar was OK. My father drank in there until he was in his 70's. The last time I was there with him he was with a friend who was an ex- paratrooper who I think dropped into Suez, another who was a pipe fitter and another one who had retired. Decent salts of the earth and I think a far cry to the sorts who got in there towards The Irwin's later days. If I do not stop now I could go on!.......

Another one bites the dust, unfortunately the Waggon & Horses,Elland Road,Holbeck closed it's doors for the final time on wednesday night. It was a pity that only about half a dozen people turned out for the final drink, although this place went downhill recently,in the same way as a few other Holbeck pubs it was at one time a great watering hole and will be sadly missed(especially by those on the way to see Leeds United).

It was The Commercial on Sweet Street that Peter Lorimar owned (i think he might still be their), the late great John Charles was a regular visitor.
That reminds me, has anyone got any pic's of The Crystal Palace that used to be on Sweet Street,i would really appreciate any help with this one.

say what you like, but it's the smoking ban....yes cheap booze at supermarkets brought king pub to his knees, but it was the smoking ban that delivered the coup de grace...most non smokers will agree with this thinking, the ones that can't,can offer up no other excuse.a sad end to what is surely the 2nd oldest profession in christandom.......AUF WIEDERSEHEN MEIN HOSTS!

But I don't want to drink and smoke at home in front of the telly every night. So much for freedom of choice. (I guess I could stand at the street corner.....maybe not.)

I have been a non smoker for 40 years but I prefered a pub that smells of smoke than food when I'm drinking.
