Knew many of the pubs mentioned, especially in the centre. One person described the Duncan as "colourful". The same could be said of its neighbour, the Star and Garter.

The Duncan, The Star and Garter and The Admiral on the other side of Boar Lane were all Sam Smiths pubs. Funny that really, three altogether can't think of another in central Leeds.

The Angel is now.

Yes it was. What was the other at the junction of Vicar Lane and Headrow - was it The Robin Hood?

I was in the Queen's Hotel,Morley last night and after speaking to the landlord who is due to retire shortly there are Rumours it may not re-open,this is a shame as even though the pub has had a bad reputation in the past,it aint a bad place to go for a pint. After Loosing the Brunswick arms which to be fair wasn't a great pub but was a damn sight better than the cheap looking flats that have replaced it and also The Albion which was one of my local's at the up untill its closure 2-3 years ago, which has been left at the mercy of the local chav's,But no doubt in due course shall also be converted into yet more apparent luxury flats...Tis a shame.Angry

Seems to me that every development of flats is 'luxury', so much luxury for us Yorkshire folk I think we are in danger of being spoiled.

Beer's not up to much in there though. There isn't what I'd call a decent pub in central Morley IMO. Nearest are the Gardeners down wide lane and the Stump Cross.

'LUXURY'......why do i feel the word was extensively used on the building of quarry hill, leak street and the other one or two blocks that have been put up[ in leeds since the thirties??

Very true trojan there isn't really a decent pub in morley, but i would rather keep these Mediocre public houses rather than be surrounded by more jumped up rabbit hutches which the developers are throwing up around morley lol,The Gardeners is alright but the stump cross is like a morgue, prefer the Cross keys especially since the live music got alot better or the halfway house with its attractive female staff, tis a bit pricey though.

The Fish and Reptiles would probably have summed up most of the patrons...

My wife comes from Ossett so we go there quite a bit and there are a least three pubs in Ossett that are pleasant to be in and sell good beer. In Dewsbury there's the West Riding Refreshment Rooms, in most towns round here there are some decent pubs selling decent ale. My favourite in Leeds is the Palace. But not in central Morley. I've lived here all my life and for most of the adult part it's always been the case. Why?

The Dog and Gun / Melbourne/ Shaftesbury / White Horse / Eagle / Hope Inn / Woodpecker...but for the likes of me, I can not picture where the Victoria was, must be having a serious senior moment, to much Tetleys Bitter in times gone by...can some one point out the location for my brain cells to get around.

Was that the new pub they built on the Ebor Gardens Estate in the early sixties looking out onto York Rd....further down from the Cinema, had about four tower blocks of flats behind it... to replace the old Vic with the marble facade..

Who Knows,Its just the case that Morley has not got a decent pub really,i mainly go into Leeds city centre if going out for the night, but i too have lived in Morley all my life and the last time i went round Locally for a few drinks the Halfway house and the Miners arms seem the only two half decent pubs in Morley the rest was seemed to be just full of chavs downing their watered down stella.

As you come out of Leeds up York Road it is just before the Irish Centre but on the opposite side of the road, before you get to the Torre Road flyover.

On the same theme but not really pubs. I have heard that there were a lot of illegal drinking dens in Quarry Hill Flats? (a little beyond my memory).

Does anyone recall these or is it myth?

Thanks people for the info re: Victoria, can't get my head around your pic Drapsey, I think the angle and the structure is not something I can recall..only ever went in there twice while on leave from Merchant Navy, couldn't get used to the new pubs, liked the old pubs best...tap rooms and sometimes a sing along with the old piano....didn't mind the Cherry Tree though, pulled a bird or two in there.

i only ever went in the Victoria once when it was called that ( a wedding reception in the very early 80's i was too young to drink i was only about 10-11 at the time) but i did go in when i changed to the trotters (late 80's if i remember rightly) we used to go in on a wednesday nights it was kind of a party night (arm wrestling competitions (£ prizes) and tug of war comps they had women mud wrestling nights, blue comedian nights etc £1 a pint etc...overall it was a great wednesday night (broke the working week up anyway) but as you say wiggy there was quiet a 'rough' clientel of person that went in
there but i more or less new most of them (the top boys anyway) the landlord was a guy who's first name escapes me his second name was Skyes & he was quiet a big bloke (easily 6ft 4" and 3tf wide LOL) he did if i can remember rightly have the Red Lion on Low road in Hunslet
(opposite the Punchclock) i was told his by an ex- girlfriend who was my boss when i worked at Kay's catalogue (here name was Karen Marsden) .Yes i must admit there was a lot of 'faces' that went into the
Trotters but overall i had a great time there (getting pi$$ed for a tenner) now that was good LOL........
