The Becketts in Meanwood is now no more. I passed at the weekend and the whole thing has now been demolished. Good job Drapesy got a picture of it prior to demolition, as it all seems to have come down pretty quickly after a couple of years of being derelict.

On a positive note the restoration of the Dyneley Arms on Pool bank appears to be being restored even if it will have flats attached

Here's another one that's gone, The Black Dog. Along with the lovely Burmantofts tiles, and now the finely named Black Dog Mills are gone too.

And another, The Compton Arms.

I often wonder what happens to the cellars when these pubs are demolished. I know they'll just push rubble down the stairs until it stops. So the bulk of the cellars will probably still be there.

I've tried to snap empty pubs over the last couple of years. If you can find it in the Leeds section it's called;

Pubs in Peril

(for which title I have to credit our good friend Lottie).

From your Flickr set, I think The Crown in Wortley is open again, I'll check when I pass tomorrow.

Too many nice buildings are being lost, it seems like we've entered an era of guilt-free development where conservation of landmarks is no longer considered. In their place you see the blandest of three storey flat units, cramped rabbit hutches for the urban poor who can afford no better, or empty investments for the equity-rich middle classes. Elsewhere, decent sized homes are being cleared because nobody wants to live in them.

One you have missed is 'JD's' off Tong Road near Whingate Junction, possibly a former social club with a grander name, in recent weeks this has become a very large hole in the ground.

Well said jf. So many fine houses and buildings have gone already, probably the majority. Unfortunately the planners can only act within planning law and not common sense!!

LCC should hang it's head in shame that places like Rutland Lodge and St. Ann's Grange were allowed to be demolished.

And you are right, much of the frenzied developments in Leeds are being driven by rich "investment clubs" who don't live here. "Buy to sit" is the new buzzword. Buy a new apartment and don't even bother with the hassle of finding a tenant. The capital appreciation should turn a tidy profit in a couple of years.

I've told my kids to remember seeing these blocks being built, as in 10-15years time they will be seeing them coming down. I've a friend who works with the concrete and rebars, his comment was:

"we're building the new Quarry Hill".

Rant (not yet) over.

The old Fforde Grene - an iconic Leeds pub for many years. When it opened it was the pride of Melbourne's estate - in a great location near busy streets and shops and between 2 cinemas. Many of my generation will remember it as a venue for live music. sadly it fell on very ropey times and after one police raid too many was closed down.

The Golden Lion in Armley. Always referred to as the 'Golden' (rather than the 'Lion') by locals for some reason.
Now in a parlous state - it looks unlikely ever to reopen.

The former 'Marquis of Lorne' - nicknamed 'Johnny Benn's'
It was briefly a real ale pub(with excellent ale as I recall) called the ' Beer Exchange' Perhaps its not dead yet, as there is a 'for sale' sign - but I'm not holding my breath

Drapesy, I didn't know they called the Golden Lion the "Golden" but it may be because there is also the White Lion just off Tong Road near Whingate Junction. Does anyone know if this is called the "White"?
