I don't think I have noticed any in England but have seen them about in Scotland and are widespread in Northern Ireland are signs that notify you that drinking alcohol in this public area can lead to a fine of up to £500. There is presumably a clearly defined line around pubs which indicate where you can drink and where the public area begins. The Scabby Taps has a makeshift fence around its "beer garden" which is rally just part of the pavement.
I assume the sign in Otley is to make this clear. However I doubt if moving the area the trouble makers were drinking a few yards would have had much effect on stopping them making trouble.

It is fairly obvious what is pub owned, and what is pavement outside The Yeoman, but there are no "official" markings. The sign could be referring to either area? However, the spot of bother took place in their private car park, round the back.

Must be. It's definately shut. The Ring O'Bells nearby is open, and I think there are other Woolpacks in the vicinity.

I was in The Ship (Briggate) a while ago, we got our beer and went to stand outside in the yard and were told that we had to drink inside as the yard/passage was council owned.

I think it's under trial in some places in England at the moment, and has been for a few years. Coventry city centre springs to mind for some reason. I also think that the police or council can request no drinking areas under the current Public Order Act as well. I seem to recall that one of the problems that these orders have brought about is an increase in 'brown bagging' with people carrying booze in paper bags as in the US.

I suspect the Public Place sign will be there so that when an order banning the drinking/carrying of alcohol in a designated area is obtained, people won't be able to say they didn't know.I don't know whether one is already in force for Otley?

We have a Controlled Drinking Zone which is primarily aimed at street drinkers [the p**s artists formerly known as tramps] but some of the pubs in Camden town have occasionally had the police turn up and either make the punters go back into the pub or, for those that refused, take their drinks from them. The Police seem to be quite even handed in their dealings with this but the Council, as per usual, are the one that over enforce the issue. I was threatened with allowing my punters to obstruct the highway, encouraging them to drop litter [they weren’t using the ashtrays provided] my premises generating an undue amount of noise and several other sundry bits of non-legislation. It seems that the next move is to prevent “single unit” sales i.e. retailers [corner shops] selling just one can of something. How that is going to be enforced, with most of the street drinkers quaffing two litre bottles of Ace, will be interesting to see.

Walked past the Albion (Armley Rd) t'other day and it appears it's days are up! Having scanned the interior, through the metal sheeting, everything has gone. All wall fittings, all non permanant furniture. Looks very bleak in there. Looks very much like the death throes of a once great pub.
Fingers crossed it's only a temp, but I felt it might well be the end!

The nearest pub to Chevin Cycles is The Junction, just across the road. If that boozer closes, we are in deep trouble...

There has been one in Halifax for a few years.
It's routinely ignored outside the magistrates court as the defendants enjoy a four pack of Stella / Tennants Super before going in, but can be rigourously enforced outside pubs on a Friday evening.

This law has been in force in Scarborough for over twelve years. When i was a rep i used to call at Boyes Store there was a sign outside the store on a lamp post stating it was against the law to consume alcohol on the street.

The Old Vic at Bramley's closed, but I have heard local gossip say that it will re-open. When? No one knows as the interior has been stripped. Like so many sudden closure pubs

There's loads of these in Leeds too. I'm surprised no one's seen 'em.

Where was the Clarendon exactly, Stutterdog? On an old map, a pub is shown at the end of Water Lane at the junction of Neville Street/Victoria Road/Great Wilson Street. Is that it? |

There was a parade of shops/houses on the corner of Water Lane roughly where Bridgewater Place now is that until about 15-20 years ago included a Barber’s I used to use. I think the row was demolished when Asda was built because to start with I think they used that wasteground over the road as an overflow car park then built an annexe on it as well before either RBS or HBOS took it over from them. I can’t remember anything resembling a pub in the row though. The barbers moved down Water Lane to roughly where the Leeds Brewery Pub is but I couldn’t say if it is still there as I haven’t noticed it and its about 10 years since I last used it.

I have to confess that the query re the Clarendon Hotel is a relatives.I dont know ,Si, if the one you have seen on your old map is the one but it certainly sounds like it could be.Uncle mick, your discovery in Kelly's Directory confirms this I think. My relative told me his Grt. Grt. Grandpa was the keeper of this hotel but I dont know when. The same person also was the landlord of the Lord Nelson at sometime in his life, possibly about 1920, he did not live at the pub but lodged in a property opposite. Thanks again for your help.
