This is great research work by Cnosni and Phill - thanks guys!. I'm amazed you found that Yorkshire Evening Post article Phill - how did you manage that??? I'm 99 percent certain that that's the article I saw and decided to check out the skulls for myself -(I must have been a strange child!!!) |
Drapesy,i swear to you and all the SLers that we walked into the research room, walked into the area with all this stuff, and i said to Phil "the answer or a clue is in here somewhere",i picked up a large rectangular thin box, said to Phil just "look at all this stuff ",opened the box and inside was 3 newspaper style YEP special editions that they print every now and then, opened the first one, turned some pages and there they were, thats the honest truth, the first thing we looked at.
|
Incredible - I think the skulls must be talking to us through the ether!!!!!

Nice one LS1 and welcome to Duncan, might be nice to hear the song live, naturally in a suitable (hic) location!!!
|
That's what I was thinking when we get a result mate. A nice couple of beers while Duncan's band belt out a few songs 'hic'
Well good news about Y.A.S Chris. There's obviously a sniff of something interesting for those guys!
sounds good to me phill just make sure that no top brass blokes try stealng your's and chris's thunder, i know this has been a team effort and i know there's no 'I' in team but you two have done some fine work on this project so just make sure you get some recognition lads eh? anyhow I'm glad things seem to have steamrolled and i hope that in the next few days maybe we will have a name for these to poor lads, then we can get the skulls back home where they belong!

Im sure i speak on the behalf of the tunnel dweller and myself, but we certainly regard this as a team effort.
In fact when the photo was being taken we were not too happy with us being at the front, but the photographer wass quite "assertive".
Everyone who has posted on here has contributed something, including the location of the skulls where they are, where they were ,maps, snippets of info, research, opinions and support in one form or another.
Keep it up everybody, including those of you just watching, dont be afraid to chip in with your thoughts, you never know someone may have some missing pieces that weve not thought of yet.
As for a "discussion" then im clear Saturday evening this week,Monday or Tuesday,Saturday Sunday next week.
If thats too short notice then shall we see for a couple of weeks time

That's a heart-warming post cnosni. There is I'm sure, alot going on with other people which doesn't even make it on to here. I must have scanned/re-read every book, cutting an phamplet I've collected over the years for wxample, just in case I've missed something.
All I found was the small piece in Burt & Grady's book - but as you will know well from family history work, often for every line of value there can be 100 pages of nothing. At least I know where there isn't any info!

Now I think about it perhaps a Friday or Saturday will not be ideal - pub likely to be noisy /lairy. How about Sunday Week (4th May)??

I pointed out to the Y.E.P who had done what and also supplied there e-mail addresses to get there version. I also used several quotes from folk on the site hoping to get a few more mentioned as well. I suppose they have to cram as much info into the story and make it straightforward easy to follow. Sunday next would be ok for me Drapsey

The Palace, Sunday 4th of May sounds good to me. BTW Well done Lee and Chris with your research! And welcome to Duncan. For what it's worth, all teams need a figurehead (especially when dealing with the press,) and I think Phill and Chris make excellent frontmen. There are two skulls after all!

Talkng about the Palace I was looking at some pictures over the road of the graves laid out along the rail embankment yesterday. the caption under the picture said 'most of the dates are from the 18th century' I wondered if our 2 soldiers just might be there?

Wow, what a lot of progress since yesterday lunchtime when I last logged in!
I checked the Leeds Intelligencer extracts 1791-96 but found nothing of interest. In answer to your question cnosni, there are no further volumes of extracts published by the Thoresby Society, so there's nothing for the period you mention (1803-14).
The only other source of information I can see in the Uni library are some bound volumes of a magazine called The Yorkshireman (1897 onwards - about 20 volumes), which include some articles about the history of Leeds and some good pen-and-ink drawings of yards and buildings. I'll do a general scan through those at lunchtimes in case the story of the skulls is told somewhere in there, and maybe some further info as to their origin. This will take some time as the books are huge but I'll post on here if I find anything!

Not sure if they would have had marked graves if they were lowley soldiers.
Is it true that there are no actual graves in the embankment and that they were moved when the railway was constructed?
