cnosni, when you say "tied up til weekend" does that include the weekend? I could manage Saturday. I actually went to the church last Saturday but it was locked up. I missed the skull on the wall but saw the 1703 grave (but the skull on that wasn't like ours, just etched into the stone rather than carved out of it, if you see what I mean!).
|
I can probably manage an hour on Saturday, depending on what time. It's near where I live.

I can get there by train, so just pick a time to suit you, and I'll meet you at the church.
PS: I have a zoom lens!

Hi Tasa, How's 12:30 sound? I'll bring my old technology zoom lens with me, too. I assume you know where the church is? It's called St. Oswald's and is up The Green behind the swimming baths. It's postcode is LS20 9BB in case you need it. See you there. Anyone else coming? Si.

Yes, see you there at 12.30pm on Saturday Si. Just realised I included the wrong name on the quote but I know it's you I'm meeting, not cnosni! Just to be certain, we are talking about St Oswald's (Guiseley Parish Church), aren't we?

It is St.Oswalds, The face on the church clock tower is on the outside, down the right hand side as you look at it from the front as you go through the lytch gate.I'm really worried now for mentioning it,don't want to waste anyone's time it may not be of interest, just wish I could have put my pics on first.

Not by choice, I assure you!
It's a shame Boston Spa and Guiseley are at opposite sides of Leeds or we could have gone to the Scout Hall too to look at these other skulls.
Last night I was reading about the Fenian (Irish Republican) Riots of 1867 - there was one in Leeds which set off from Vicar's Croft and processed to St Patrick's church on York Road. Two men were killed, and I wondered if our skulls might have been a subtle memorial to them (and hence not displayed on the outside of the pub) - but I admit that I am now resorting to imagination and not to serious research!!

i think that the other skulls mentioned on here are a bit of a wild goose chase . The best we could hope for would be a similiar style of carving.the information on various carvings etc however is useful and I would suggest putting it into a separate thread . What do others think?

You could be right! I only mentioned St.Oswalds and the gravestone with a skull as a possible help date wise,I certainly don't want to send anyone on a wild goose chase.

I've located a copy of the book at Oxford University Library so I've just emailed them to ask if someone can find the full text of the bit about the Crown & Fleece and send it to me. No guarantee of a reply but worth a shot!

Many thanks Christina, but ive a feeling that tere would be too much in there for you to be able to record for me. I have both my Mums and Dads side in that place,it will be choca bloc with my family.
I am actually working on a complete list of all the names i need to look at at the moment(have just recieved Guiseley PR 1584-1720 on Cd rom) so i was thinking of dedicating a full day at least to wandering around at some stage (monumental inscriptions etc)
Thanks all the same, but when i jump into Guiseley its going to be a very long and deep dive if you know what i mean.

St. Oswald's was interesting, Lilysmum. The "skull" set in the wall of the church tower looks very old, and I think the tower is the oldest bit of the building visible (1300s.) Does this give us a tentative date for our skulls? Tasa will post a picture when she's got her new software up and running. The skull could be a face - it is very weathered, but interestingly, is carved from a squared block of masonry which extends to either side. It looks original to the building. The skull and crossbones on the old gravestone is very simplified, being a shallow carved oval with two circles and a triangle forming the eyes and nose. The mason who carved the stone made several mistakes. He spelt "interred" with a b on the end which was altered to a d, and he also ran out of room for the deceased's name, adding the final r of Christopher above the e! I don't think this trip gets us any further, but I enjoyed myself, and Tasa and I had a pint of Landlord each outside The New Inn in the sunshine, so not a wasted journey!

OK, I've heard back from Oxford Uni - unfortunately their volume is a different year and at that time, the Branch of Hope was meeting in the Union Tavern on Meadow Lane. The librarian was kind enough to check the whole Leeds section, but found no mention of the Crown and Fleece. However, I've now emailed Harvard University as they digitised the 1876 edition mentioned above. I love technology!!
